VOLANTE, KLINGER, SIEGEL, BILGILI: Immigrant youth help to build nations

Brock Faculty of Education Professor Louis Volante co-authored a piece that was recently published in The Conversation looking at the role immigrant youth play in contributing to a vibrant society. The piece was written in conjunction with professors Don Klinger, of Queen’s University in Kingston, Melissa Siegel, of Maastricht University, and Ozge Bilgili, of Utrecht University, both in the Netherlands.

Volante and his co-authors write:

Immigrants and refugees, especially those from developing nations, are often portrayed by segments of the media and policy makers as an economic burden, a threat to our social cohesion and “our way of life.”

However, immigrants and immigrant youth can help build nations like Canada. They are a great source of economic potential, while also contributing to a rich cultural mosaic. But immigrants must be supported with appropriate education and training policies.
