406 construction project begins, and so do the road closures

The detours are coming.

Road closures will hit home next week for Brock University commuters who travel through the interchange of Highways 406, 58 and St. David’s Road.

As crews begin a three-year overhaul of the busy interchange, a number of lane reductions or closures will take effect the week of July 10. Some will be overnight traffic restrictions, but others will see lanes or ramps shut down for several months:

The biggest impact will be for 406 drivers approaching from the south (Welland). The ramp to St David’s Road West /Sir Isaac Brock Way (leading to the University) will be shut down until November or December. For a detour, northbound motorists headed for Brock should exit the 406 at Beaverdams Road, then reach the campus via Merrittville Highway.

Other traffic impacts for this phase of construction include:

  • Nightly closure of the ramp from eastbound David’s Road to Hwy 406 northbound (St. Catharines).
  • Traffic reduced to a single lane in both directions on St. David’s Road
  • Lane closures on Hwy 406 northbound (St. Catharines).

Project updates on traffic flows will be published in the Brock News throughout the construction period.

Many Brock commuters will be affected when the ramp from northbound 406 to westbound St. David’s Road/Sir Isaac Brock Way is shut down for several months.
