Scholarship to support Brock student’s Swedish studies

When Brock student Emma Chamberland heads off to Sweden on exchange this fall, she will do so with an extra boost of support.

Chamberland was chosen for a 2017-18 Swedish Women’s Educational Association (SWEA) Toronto Scholarship that will assist with her studies abroad.

SWEA is an international organization that aims to promote Swedish history, culture and tradition outside of Sweden.

For more than 25 years, the Toronto chapter of SWEA has offered scholarships to full-time students at Ontario universities that have established exchange agreements with Swedish universities.

Brock has four official exchange agreements with universities in Sweden: Linnaeus University, Karlstad University, Stockholm Business School and University of Gothenburg.

Through the SWEA scholarship, Chamberland will receive $1,500 for her term at Linnaeus University.

“During my exchange I am looking forward to immersing myself in a new culture very different than my own that has such a strong social welfare system, environmental sustainability and embraced equality,” said the third-year Sport Management student.

“I’m also super excited to be exploring a new country and making friends from across the world.”

While in Sweden, Chamberland will be working on her language skills and plans to gain an intercultural perspective to her sport management degree.

After completing her fall term at Linnaeus, Chamberland will travel to Australia to complete a second term overseas.

In addition to the SWEA scholarship, Chamberland will also receive Brock’s International Student Mobility award that will provide $1,000 in support toward her two terms abroad.

This year’s call for applications for the SWEA Toronto Scholarship received a record 72 applications from 12 Ontario universities.
