Student-led fashion show to highlight local talent

Brock models will strut down the runway Saturday, March 25 to showcase the creations of local designers at the third annual Panorama Fashion Show.

Hosted by Brock Fashion HQ, a student club on campus, the event takes place at the Pen Centre and will feature the work of seven up-and-coming designers.

Brock University apparel, and clothing from Arlies at the St. Catharines mall, will also be showcased.

“The core reason for the show is to create brand awareness for local designers and designers from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area),” said event organizer and club founder Kidisha Joseph.

When the Toronto native moved to Niagara, she realized there were few outlets for budding fashion enthusiasts to express themselves creatively.

“I had so many friends at Brock majoring in the sciences and other programs far from the arts who had a passion for designing clothing,” said the fifth-year Media and Communication student.

Despite having the desire to design, those students had no outlet within Niagara to present those ideas.

Rather than encourage them to head to fashion-forward Toronto, Joseph recognized an opportunity to introduce something new to Niagara.

The Panorama Fashion Show has since proven helpful for designers looking to build their brand.

“It has helped them to build clientele, interest and awareness, as well as a sense of community over appreciating art, fashion, innovation and people’s entrepreneurial spirit,” Joseph said.

The show, which features Brock models, has also become a popular venue for networking.

The hope is to see the event continue to grow over the years, Joseph said.

To bring that vision to life, however, new executive members for Brock Fashion HQ are needed.

Anyone interested in joining the club can visit the Brock Fashion HQ Facebook page for more information.

Doors for Saturday’s event open at 7 p.m., with the show kicking off at 7:30.

The evening, catered by the Stone Mill Inn, will feature a variety of vendors, including a number of accessory designers and small businesses.

Tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance at guest service at the Pen Centre, or at the door for $25.

Brock Fashion HQ will be doing a daylong takeover of Brock’s Snapchat account. To follow along and view behind-the-scenes footage, add brockuni to Snapchat.
