New stop signs, lower speed limit for University Road

Drivers on campus may notice a few extra stop signs installed Monday in the name of pedestrian safety.

Stop signs have been added in both directions on University Road West at the crosswalks in front of Walker Complex and Welch Hall, as well as on University Road East at the crosswalk in front of Cairns Complex.

Additionally, the speed limit on University Road West has been lowered to 30 km/h from the 40 km/h it had been.

“That route is a long stretch, so the stop signs and lower speed limit will force drivers to stop and be more aware of their surroundings,” said Leigh Harold, Brock University’s Director of Health, Safety and Wellness. “These have been added to increase pedestrian safety around campus.”

“This is a small measure to increase the safety of the entire Brock community who use the crosswalks,” said Rick Fraser, Manager, Emergency Management and Life Safety. “We recognize that it’s not just students, staff and faculty, but our community partners like the day care in addition to the various camps and community members who use the campus.”

Harold said it’s also important for pedestrians to watch for vehicles and be aware when crossing roadways anywhere on campus.
