Souper Star lunch kicks off $145,000 United Way campaign

Brock University’s 2016 United Way campaign kicked off Wednesday with some hearty soup and light-hearted rivalries.

A flag-raising ceremony on the podium in front of Schmon Tower got the campaign under way, and then the annual Souper Star lunch saw Goodman School of Business Interim Dean Barry Wright hoist the Souper Bowl trophy over his head as this year’s champions.

The Brock United Way committee set this year’s fundraising goal at $145,000, $5,000 more than last year. Employees are encouraged to fill out their payroll deduction forms and return them to HR.

The first donations were made Wednesday afternoon when Wright encouraged everyone assembled in Market Hall to fill the Souper Bowl trophy with more money than the Faculty of Math and Science was able to collect on the day it took the soup title last year.

“It’s such a great event and a great cause, so a big tip of the hat to the organizers and the people who donated their dollars to be part of this. We were fortunate to have a wonderful soup to serve,” Wright said.

Goodman served up a Calypso Corn Chowder with crab and lime that was cooked by Sodexo chef Ron Davis, whose soups have won the contest three times in the six years he has worked at Brock.

The Faculty of Humanities finished second with a Cream of Tomato with smoked cheddar and bacon.
