As he started his first week as the University’s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Tom Traves sent the following message to members of the Brock community:
Hello to all of my new colleagues at Brock,
It was with a sense of positive anticipation that I accepted the invitation to become the Interim President and Vice-Chancellor at your — or let me say, our — University.
Brock has a reputation for being one of Canada’s most progressive mid-sized universities, and I am looking forward to becoming a part of this institution.
I recognize that I have some significant shoes to fill. I have known Jack Lightstone for many years and I’m well aware of how, under his leadership, the Brock team transformed the scope, reputation and physical attributes of this University.
I’m also aware that these past few months have been busy ones at Brock, and I am in deep admiration of all of the staff and faculty who made sure the University did not miss a beat in delivering a high-calibre educational experience to our students. I want to particularly recognize Brian Hutchings as Acting President and Greg Finn as Interim Provost. In Brock’s hour of need, they did not hesitate to step forward and provide the kind of energy that gave Brock strong academic and administrative leadership.
Brock today is known as a leader in experiential learning and community engagement, as an emerging centre of research excellence and graduate studies, and as a university with one of the best student and campus life experiences in Ontario.
This is a mantle I am proud to help carry, and I look forward to meeting and working with you all in the coming weeks and months.
Surgite!
Sincerely,
Tom Traves
Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Brock University
