Safety reminders for the new school year

Keeping the campus safe is everyone’s responsibility. With the start of the new school year, Brock is reminding you of the following important safety information. 

Emergencies

In the event of an emergency, call 911 or Campus Security at extension 3200. There are numerous emergency phones, automated external defibrillators (AED) and first aid stations located across campus that can be used when assistance is required. Campus Security recommends the Brock Mobile App be downloaded to your mobile device. Brock Mobile lets Brock University students, staff and faculty quickly access campus and local resources 24/7.

Reporting Health & Safety Incidents

If you experience or witness incidents, injuries, near misses or health and safety hazards, please report the circumstances to a person in authority such as an area supervisor or Brock employee. Circumstances are to be reported on an injury/incident report. Completed reports and questions can be directed to the Health, Safety & Wellness department via email besafe@brocku.ca or phone extension 7233.

Mobile Device Distraction

People walking on campus while operating, talking or texting on mobile devices can be very hazardous and distracting, which could lead to trips, falls and collisions. To avoid injuries and incidents, please stay alert and aware of your surroundings. You can stay alert and aware by always checking traffic when crossing roads/streets and keeping headphone volumes low so you can hear your surroundings. If you must talk or text, move out of the stream of pedestrian traffic and stop walking while talking/texting.

Slips, Trips and Falls

Be aware of circumstances both indoors and outdoors when travelling around campus by scanning the areas in your path and avoiding any materials or walking surfaces that could contribute to a slip, trip and fall. Wearing appropriate footwear for the weather, avoiding rushing or taking short cuts will also help prevent slip, trip and fall incidents. You can help maintain a safe campus by avoiding, addressing and reporting all slip, trip and fall hazards.

Personal Transportation Devices

To reduce the risk of injury and/or damage to property, indoor use of a personal transportation devices is prohibited. Personal transportation devices include but are not limited to bicycles, hover boards, in?line skates, segways, scooters and skateboards. Assistive devices for persons with disabilities are exempted. Inquiries about assisted devices can be directed to accessibility@brocku.ca. Use of personal transportation devices outdoors must be carried-out in a lawful, safe and courteous manner that respects all pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Tricks or maneuvers that could cause damage to property or injury to individuals is strictly prohibited.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot onboard. UAV is a broad term that can include a wide variety of piloted or autonomous aircraft of any size and design. Please be aware that due to Transport Canada regulations, drone use is not permitted on Brock University property.
