This week’s Conversations with Goodman podcast guest is Murray Nystrom, head coach of the Brock University men’s hockey team.
Nystrom talks with host Susan LeBlanc about Friday’s historic Steel Blade Classic game that’s taking place at the Meridian Centre for the first time.
Over the past year, marketing students at Brock’s Goodman School of Business have been working with Nystrom and his team on the Steel Blade Classic through Service-Learning projects in two different marketing courses.
Service-Learning is integrated course programming that allows students to partner with local small businesses or not-for-profit organizations to help them overcome business challenges.
The work counts as part of their course grade, they have the opportunity to learn something different in a new way and they can make significant contributions to the partner organization.
Nystrom explains that his Service-Learning experience was a win on his side, too.
“I thought the exercise was outstanding from both sides of the table. I think the students probably spent some late nights trying to put some things together but to have something tangible at the end of it, this Friday, they can see it, feel it and participate in it, that’s the unique part of the experience that they’re getting that Goodman provides,” said Nystrom.
“Some of the ideas the students came up with are being acted upon. I think the tailgate theme party was something that was one of the early suggestions by our student group and I think it’s nice to see that come to fruition.”
In preparation of Friday’s game, Nystrom sums it up by saying, “wear your school colours and yell loud.”
