Spring Glory concert featuring Brock’s student choral ensembles taking place Saturday

The Viva Voce Choral Series is holding the evening program Spring Glory Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m.

The Viva Voce Choral Series features Brock University’s student choral ensembles (men’s and women’s choruses) as well as Avanti Chamber Singers, who serve as Ensemble-in-Residence for the Department of Music.

Under the direction of conductor Harris Loewen, these choirs perform multiple concerts throughout the academic year. They have also engaged in community outreach, collaborated with other Ontario choirs, and produced three CD recordings of works by Niagara composers.

The April 2 evening program will feature a variety of Canadian and international works, including premiere performances of two works by Niagara composers. “Ave Maria” by Eric Gero will be performed jointly by the two university choirs. They are joined by Avanti Chamber Singers and the Rondeau Brass for the grand finale, a multi-movement “Gloria” by Brock Music Department composer Peter Landey.

Other items on the program include musical settings of poetry by Emily Dickinson and Pauline Johnson, a suite of Irish folk songs and a variety of other choral part songs. Many of these items will feature Niagara violinist Gail Poulsen as well as individual members of the Rondeau Brass.

The event takes place at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 99 Ontario St. in St. Catharines.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 eyeGo high school program.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance at the Brock University Bookstore, Thorold Music (289 Glendale Ave.) and Long & McQuade (41 Geneva St.).
