Mental health week activities planned

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Mental Health Week is an annual national event that takes place during the first week in May to encourage people from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues relating to mental health.

Brock University’s Health Management recognizes the importance of raising mental health awareness, reducing the stigma and providing opportunities to promote overall wellness.

All staff and faculty are encouraged to join in the events planned for Mental Health Week and #GetLoud in taking steps to focus on the importance of mental well-being.

There are a variety of events taking place on campus the week of May 2-6:

• Art Activity Drop-In on May 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in MCA 323: Explore the therapeutic benefits of colouring. Adult colouring is one of the latest strategies for coping with stress and anxiety.

• Yoga for Everyone on May 3 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Bob Davis Gym: Drop in for the basics of yoga. If you have your own yoga mat, please feel free to bring it along. Dress comfortably and learn more about the benefits of yoga.

• Shepell Workshop: Creating Balance in Your Life on May 5 from noon to 1 p.m.: In today’s environment of competing demands, relentless commitments and a consistent feeling of shortage of time, balance often does not come easily or naturally. A conscious effort, deep commitment and clear priorities are required to create and protect one’s sense of balance. This session will help participants explore how their current choices impact their work-life satisfaction and help them develop strategies to achieve a greater balance in life.

• Wear green, enjoy a walk followed by a BBQ lunch all in support of Mental Health on May 6 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.: At 11:15 a.m. meet in the lobby of Schmon Tower and enjoy a 30-minute walk outside, weather permitting. The walk concludes in Jubilee Court for a barbecue to support the Canadian Mental Health Association – Niagara in their mental health initiatives. Wear green in support of Mental Health Awareness and reducing the stigma. The barbecue will include your choice of hamburger, hotdog or veggie burger served with kettle chips for $5.50.  Pop or water is $1.50. Staff and faculty are asked to plan to spend $10 (meal and drink), which will include a $3 donation to CMHA Niagara to enhance their initiatives in the Niagara Community.  Additional donations will be also be accepted
