The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and Human Rights Training represents Brock University’s final training requirement for accessibility under the province’s law. It must be completed by all faculty and staff by the end of May.
In 2010 when the Accessible Customer Service Standard was released, there came with it a requirement to train all staff on the issue of disability and access to goods and services. This was called the Accessible Service Tutorial and it has since been offered on the portal as a requirement for new employees.
With the development of the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) there came a second training requirement that deals with the application of Human Rights, the AODA and Human Rights training. In order to meet our legal responsibility, this particular training was launched in 2015 on the SAKAI learning management system so it could be delivered quickly but also so that the training can be updated when required with relevant and timely information. Brock University is now responsible for the delivery of both the Accessible Service Tutorial and the AODA and Human Rights training, as one does not replace the other.
The main purpose for conducting training of this sort is to start a discussion about creating a culture shift from viewing disability issues as strictly an accommodation issue to a positive aspect of diversity.
