A new series of lunchtime talks will explore experiential learning at Brock University.
Experiential Lunch Conversations is a way of engaging in meaningful conversation about teaching and learning, as well as looking at how we might provide opportunities for our students to apply their learning in high-impact ways.
Short presentations (approximately 15 minutes) from faculty, staff, students or community partners doing exciting things in experiential education will open the sessions, followed by questions and open discussion. These sessions are casual – all are welcome to join in and to bring their lunch.
“We need to keep the conversation going,” says Sandy Howe, Associate Director, Experiential Education. “Brock has pockets of brilliant experiential opportunities for students happening all across campus and this gives us a way to come together, share and learn from each other.”
To get the series started, the following sessions are taking place:
• Wednesday, Feb. 3 at noon – Effects of Course Characteristics, Community Engagement, and Individual Differences on Civic and Developmental Outcomes for College Students through Service-Learning: Insights from an Egyptian Context, research shared by Neivin Shalabi fron the Faculty of Education.
• Monday, Feb. 8 at 11:30 a.m. – The University of Florida/Disney Internship Program will be shared by Christina Bosilo from International Services.
• Tuesday, March 1 at 11:30 a.m. – Getting to Know the Campus Wide Co-Curriculum will be shared by Amber Scholtens from Student Life & Community Experience and a Brock student
All three sessions will be held in ST103 (CPI’s new active learning classroom in the basement of the Schmon Tower near Career Services).
Come and discover this new space, connect with colleagues, learn something new and invite any others who may also be interested.
“Experiential learning is a huge part of the Brock experience,” says Howe. “It would be great to see this grow in the future so that students can apply their knowledge, have meaningful experiences, learn new skills, and be well prepared for whatever comes next for them in life after their time at Brock.”
If you have a topic you would like to contribute to these discussions, please be in touch with Sandy Howe at showe@brocku.ca or by calling (905) 688-5550 ext. 4126. If you would like to bring students or community partners with you to share their experiences related to your topic, their voice would be a wonderful addition to these conversations.
