Pine tree plants roots of Native engagement on campus

A White Pine tree planted in a simple garden near the Cairns Complex Saturday in a ceremony following Fall Convocation has deeper meaning to the Brock University community.

The tree located in the high-traffic north side lawn of Cairns is the start of a Healing Garden meant to symbolize Brock’s commitment to Native students and issues. It’s a focal point for positive discussion.

At the ceremony Saturday, which was organized by Brock’s Aboriginal Student Organization, new Brock Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo sang a healing song in her native language while others said prayers and played traditional drums. Brock’s Elder in Residence Carol Jacobs and President Jack Lightstone also spoke about the significance of the tree.
