Brock University is throwing a party Tuesday and everyone’s invited.
Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock was born on Oct. 6, 1769, and while the anniversary of his death (Oct. 13, 1812) is often remembered, his birthday doesn’t get much recognition.
Hoping to start a new campus-wide tradition, a handful of Brock students, faculty and staff got together and planned a birthday party – a 246th birthday party, to be precise.
“This was the perfect year to start this annual tradition with the arrival of the General statue on campus,” said Kristen Smith, Manager, Student and Community Outreach.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring all members of the Brock community together to celebrate our namesake. And who doesn’t love a birthday party?”
What started as a party in front of the new Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock statue, has now turned into a day-long celebration of all things Brock.
RED DAY
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear red Tuesday in honour of Brock’s big day.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
At 12:30 p.m., hundreds of students and staff will meet in front of the statue to mark the occasion with 1,000 red and white cupcakes, a celebratory toast of red punch, and the singing of Happy Birthday. There will also be a giant birthday card for everyone to sign using their thumbprints.
BROCK BEER
At 3 p.m., the Brock University Students’ Union will launch Sir Isaac’s Ale. The craft beer is being produced for BUSU by the Niagara College Teaching Brewery and will be available on tap moving forward. The launch party runs from 3 to 6 p.m. at Skybar Lounge.
ALPHIE’S TROUGH SOCIAL
Brock staff and faculty are invited to attend a casual social gathering at the recently re-launched Alphie’s Trough at 4:30 p.m. Sir Isaac’s Ale will be available for the occasion.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Can’t make it to the party? Brock alumni and community members are encouraged to send along best wishes to Sir Isaac by using the hashtag #Surgite on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
HYPE NIGHT
Building on the excitement of Sir Isaac’s birthday party, Brock University Athletics are hosting Hype Night #WeAreReady, a pep rally at Bob Davis Gymnasium from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The free event will launch Brock’s #WeAreReady school pride campaign and will include introductions of Badgers athletes, singing and dancing performances, and lots of giveaways.
