Senate meeting agenda for May 13

Senate will meet on Wednesday, May 13 at 3 p.m. in the Sankey Chamber to discuss the following:

The Report of the President includes congratulations to faculty, students and staff on the conclusion of a successful term. It also acknowledges with thanks the announcement of $10 million dollars to support the extension to the Goodman School of Business. https://brocku.ca/webfm_send/36232
The appendices contain information on ‘proposed actions to ensure our university is sustainable in challenging times.’ Please see this report and the accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The Report of the Provost and Vice-President Academic echoes the congratulations to faculty, students and staff on the conclusion of the term, and the actions of the government to address the funding formula that is in need of reform. He refers us to the two outlets (a website and email address) that will receive input on the funding formula.

Gary Libben’s Report from Research Services provides supplementary information on research funding and grant development support. The substance of the report is in the data provided to help us understand our publication status. The report concludes that “By submitting important and exciting applications for funding and disseminating research developments through publication and other forms of research communication, we are mobilizing our knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world around us.”

Topics that are of critical interest to faculty are addressed in the Report of the Academic Colleague. These are:
• the funding formula;
• part-time sessional faculty;
• Internationalization; and
• the decline in demand for arts and humanities programs.

A summary of the actions of the Board of Trustees at its last meeting can be found online.

The Graduate Studies Committee has three recommendations for Senate. These policies deal with admission to doctoral studies, advanced standing for students who take principals’ qualifications A.Q. courses, and the selection of examiners for graduate defenses.

The Research and Scholarship Policy Committee is recommending that Senate

1. extend the term of the Jack and Nora Walker Canadian Centre for Lifespan Development Research.

2. postpone the decision on the extension of the term for the Tecumseh Centre for six months.

In addition to its recommendations for additions to the course bank, the Undergraduate Program Committee is recommending that senate approve

1. a pilot Academic Recovery Policy.

2. revisions to the Goodman School of Business Periodic Review of Eligibility Sections and Addition of General Information, Program Notes, and Program of Study for the International Dual Degree program.

3. notes and Revisions to Bachelor of Public Health, Community Health General Information, Program Notes, Articulation Programs and Explanations, Health Sciences General Information and Articulation Program Explanation.
