Centre for the Arts, Brock University has teamed up with longstanding theatre troupe, The Lakeside Players, to bring the 1987 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Talk Radio, starring and directed by News Talk 610 CKTB’s Tim Denis, to the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, Brock University on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
After a very successful run of Talk Radio by The Players Guild in Hamilton in February 2013 (also starring and directed by Denis), Centre director Debbie Slade teamed up with Lakeside Players to bring this production back to the stage. Having been without a home since the closing of the Port Mansion Dinner Theatre, this was the perfect opportunity to work with the local producers to build future theatre audiences for the new downtown St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre.
Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio is the edgy story of controversial Cleveland-area shock jock, Barry Champlain, on the eve of his radio show’s national syndication. Champlain’s bickering with his unseen callers are peppered with insights into his character from his ex-deejay pal and his sometime girlfriend/producer, and punctuated with a transformative visit from a disembodied voice.
Talk Radio has been performed off-Broadway, on Broadway, at international Fringe Festivals and was even made in to a feature film by Oliver Stone and Eric Bogosian. Portions of the story were based on the assassination of radio host Alan Berg in 1984. Please note this production contains mature language and content.
“Denis’s direction is sure and confident. A radio personality himself he understands this milieu and never ameliorates its brutal ugliness.” – The Hamilton Spectator
