Brock University graduate Adel Mansurov (BSM ’13) received a City of Toronto International Student Excellence award in the sports category Sept. 27.
The awards — a collaboration between the City of Toronto, Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, partner academic institutions, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, and sponsors — recognize the significant economic and socio-cultural contribution international students make.
Other award categories include community services, entrepreneurship, academic excellence, arts and culture and professional achievement.
As a member of Canada’s Mission staff at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Mansurov helped the Canadian Olympic Committee with six weeks of volunteer service at the highest level in his field.
His multiple language skills and Sport Management undergraduate degree prepared him for the role, which included assisting in pre-event service preparation, issue management, and transportation services.
Mansurov was born in Tashkent, Russia and has been noted for giving back since he arrived in Canada in 2008. He has contributed to the development of the operational plan for the 2013 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Welland, and assisted in communication processes between the guest countries during the same events.
Mansurov completed his 12-week, full-time internship in the summer of 2012 at the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada in Montreal.
He assisted in developing the appeal panel training program, learned the appeal policies, and also studied and catalogued the historical legal cases as part of his duties in his project assistant role. He was an excellent ambassador for Brock University while serving in his internship.
Additionally, Mansurov has fully participated in the community by helping students to improve their English language skills as an international communication assistant, working as a cultural assistant receptionist, participating in the Brock University Student Union (BUSU), and being involved in the International Student Association (ISA).
Mansurov was accepted into the Juris Doctor program (law) at the University of Ottawa.
