Richard Wagamese, author of Indian Horse, will sign his book March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Pond Outlet, with a talk at 7 p.m.

With Brock celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014, the Aboriginal Education Council created the Brock Summer 2014 Pick program.

Inspired from CBC’s annual ‘Canada Reads‘ contest, Brock’s initiative involves reading any or all of the books: Trace DeMeyer and Patricia Cotter-Busbee’s Two Worlds; Joseph Boydon’s Three Day Road, and Richard Wagamese’s Indian Horse, and rating them online.

The program was organized to commemorate Brock’s anniversary and the 400th anniversary of the pivotal Two Row Wampum Treaty that was established between First Nations people and colonial settlers in the northeast.

When the poll closes, the book with the highest ratings will be declared Brock’s Pick for 2014 Summer Reading.

This announcement will be made end of April in conjunction with a performance by Debajehmujig (an Aboriginal theatre troupe) hosted by Brock’s Centre for the Arts.

Four events are planned between March 18-March 31 and are free and open to the public:

Tuesday, March 18
Coffee house from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. sponsored by CHYS students with free refreshments and rotating presentations approximately every 20 minutes, held in Cairns 336 (which is in the Child and Youth Department suite of offices).

Monday, March 24
A different Coffee house from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., same format, held in Pond Inlet.

Tuesday, March 25
Tracey DeMeyer and Patricia Cotter-Busbee, the co-editors of Two Worlds, together with a couple of the contributors, start their book signing at 6 p.m. A panel presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Cairns 336. There will also be a potluck dinner around 5 p.m. with DeMeyer and Cotter-Busbee.

Monday, March 31
Following a small potluck dinner around 5 p.m., Wagamese, author of Indian Horse, will sign his book at 6:30 p.m. at Pond Outlet, with a talk at 7 p.m.
