Charles Kissi

Brock University Athletics is pleased to announce Charles Kissi as the new head coach of the Brock men’s basketball program. He becomes the seventh head coach in the program’s history.

“We look forward to Charles joining our staff,” says Brock director of Athletics Robert Hilson. “He is an excellent leader that possesses strong values that are consistent with Brock University, Brock Athletics, Brock Alumni and the Niagara Community.”

Kissi, a 32-year old native of Toronto, Ont., takes over one of only four programs in Canadian Interuniversity Sport that has captured two or more National Championships over the past 20 years.

“Brock University has a great athletics program with a lot of success and it is a university that strives for excellence in everything it does,” says Kissi. “I look forward to working alongside great leaders in Robert Hilson and Chris Critelli as well as all the other coaches and people at Brock.”

In 2012-2013, Kissi served as an apprentice coach with the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, being mentored by Raptors Head Coach Dwayne Casey. Kissi was the subject of a six-part documentary “Raptors Coaches Open House Protégé Program” that aired on NBA TV Canada and is currently posted on the Toronto Raptors YouTube channel.

Prior to working with the Toronto Raptors, Kissi served as the Head Coach of the Ryerson Ram’s women’s basketball program, highlighted by a berth into the OUA East Final Four in 2010-2011. He joined Ryerson in 2009-2010 as an assistant coach, working under St. Catharines native and former National Team assistant coach, Sandy Pothier.

At the club level, Kissi was head coach of the Tri-County Thunder JUEL Team in 2012-13. From 2004-09 Kissi coached with the Scarborough Blues club program leading female squads to provincial and national tournaments.

Kissi is currently a Detective Constable with Toronto Police Services and has worked as a police officer for a decade.

A former player at McMaster University, he competed in two national championship tournaments with the Marauders. He was also the team’s 2003 recipient of the Liam Stevens Award, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of positive attitude, hard work and determination.

The Badgers open their non-conference schedule on Sept. 27 at home against the Niagara College Knights in the Peninsula Classic. Brock will also be at home against UQAM (Oct. 13) and take part in the Waterloo Invitational Oct. 18 to 20. Brock rounds out their non-conference schedule Oct. 24 to 26 when they host the RBC Classic with York, Regina and Saint Mary’s coming to St. Catharines. They begin the 2013-14 OUA regular season at home against the Ryerson Rams Nov. 1.
