Prominent poets kick off distinguished speaker series

Two of Canada’s most eminent African-Canadian poets will headline this year’s Faculty of Education Distinguished Speaker Series.

George Elliott Clarke and Pamela Mordecai present Audible Motion: New School Black Verse on Thursday, April 11.

Their presentation, covering class time, playtime, and contemplation, will engage the illicit and subversive aspects of each of their new verse collections.

It happens from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sankey Chamber.

Clarke is the E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian Literature at the University of Toronto and current poet laureate of Toronto.

He won the Governor General’s poetry award for his collection called Execution Poems. His latest collection, Illicit Sonnets, is set to be released this year.

Mordecai is a former language arts teacher, who has written textbooks and articles on Caribbean literature and language education. She has written poems and stories for both adults and children.

Her fifth collection of poetry, Subversive Sonnets, was published last year.
