Nominations sought for BUSU elections

BUSU is taking nominations for its upcoming elections.

Students who have ever dreamed of being called president has their chance to earn that title now that nominations are open for the next students’ union election.

Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) is accepting candidate nominations for the elected roles of president and three vice-presidents: finance and administration, student services, and university affairs.

Three seats are also open on BUSU’s board of directors.

“Being in one of those positions, you get to be like the head of an organization, which is like being the head of a corporation,” said Jimmy Norman, BUSU’s chief returning officer.

Norman, who served on the Brock University Students’ Administrative Council (BUSAC), said being elected to serve fellow students helps strengthen the Brock community.

“It was good for me because you get to listen to constituents and bring forth issues that are important to them,” he said. “You do get a sense that you’re voicing the concerns of students and making Brock a better place.”

Nomination forms are available at the BUSU office in the Student-Alumni Centre and are due Friday, Jan. 25 at 4:30 p.m.

The campaign period runs Feb. 4 to 14 and those elected to the students’ union serve a one-year term from May 2013 to May 2014.

There is no fee for nominations. Election campaigns have a $300-spending limit, though that money is reimbursed by BUSU when candidates submit receipts for campaign expenses. Campaign loans are also available for students in need.

For more information, contact Norman at cro@busu.net or visit the BUSU website.

“I’ll sit down with (prospective candidates) at any time,” Norman said. “This is a great way to get involved at Brock.”
