A cycling group peddling fitness and philanthropy has emerged at Brock and is looking to grow.

The Brock Cyclones are calling for like-minded folks to join them in the Big Move Cancer Ride next year. The event supports the Walker Family Cancer Centre at the new St. Catharines hospital, both of which open in March 2013.

The current crew of eight faculty and staff are recruiting more members to put rubber to pavement after participating in the fundraiser earlier this month. They hit the road on one of three routes – 50 km, 100 km, and 160 km. A three-hour spinning session at Club Roma, the event’s home base, also took place.

Representing Brock were Ethna Bernat, Claire Gallop, Katerina Gonzalez, Marion Hansen, Douglas Kneale, Elna Mayberry, David Siegel, and Karl Thorp.

Collectively they raised about $4,000 for the cause while being treated to scenic views of the escarpment and surrounding countryside on a marshaled route.

The event as a whole raised more than $500,000. These funds will stay in the community to benefit local residents.

To join the Brock Cyclones as a participant or event volunteer, please contact Katerina Gonzalez, team captain, at 905-688-5550, ext. 5566 or kgonzalez@brocku.ca. Cyclists, spinners, rollerbladers, and volunteers are welcome.
