Paddlers needed for Brock dragon boat team

The Brock Paddleheads need more team members to participate in the upcoming dragon boat festival on Martindale Pond July 28.

The Brock Paddleheads are hoping their plans on July 28 won’t be sunk.

But they could be if the University’s dragon boat team doesn’t get a few more people to help the team row their boat to possible glory.

So far, the Paddleheads are down four people to float their dragon boat at the 13th annual Dragon Boat Festival on Martindale Pond in support of Wellspring Niagara and the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

Twenty paddlers are required for the event on Saturday, July 28. The team is nearing that count but Hilary Canivet, who’s helping to organize the Paddleheads, hopes at least three more people sign up, just in case someone else bails.

“If we don’t (get enough people) then we can’t participate. We’re kind of at that crunch point,” Canivet said.

Here’s what to expect if you sign up: two practices followed by a full day of showing off your paddling prowess.

The practices happen July 24 and 26 in the evening. Festival day includes two qualifying rounds and the finals. Canivet said the Paddleheads will participate in all three races on the pond.

But those worried about the time commitment, know that Mother Nature may be on your side.

“They’re trying to rush the day because it’s so hot,” Canivet said.

For those who may not be up to paddling, there’s another important job on the fierce-looking dragon boat that needs filling. The Paddleheads need a drummer to keep everyone rowing in unison.

Volunteers are also needed to assist the festival organizing committee during practices, which run from July 23 to 27, and with event setup. Those interested can send an email to community@brocku.ca.

Prospective paddlers can visit the Paddleheads web page to register. Canivet hopes to have a full roster by July 23 and asks that team members collect a donation of at least $30 to $40.

Editor’s note: The Brock Paddleheads now have a full roster of paddlers.
