The Brock community has done so well buying gifts for kids in need that this year, its efforts are doubled.
The Campus Store is displaying 400 mittens with the names and ages of local children who need gifts, twice as many as last year. The effort is part of the Adopt an Angel program, a charitable program through Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.
The names are displayed on a holiday tree in the Campus Store. Some are also displayed on the walls behind the counter. To participate, take a paper mitten. Return the mitten with a new, unwrapped gift for the child.
This is the 11th year the store has participated. Students and employees are encouraged to take names. Donations don’t just have to be toys, said Kate Jones, Campus Store services assistant.
“Mittens and hats and scarves are appreciated just as much,” she said.
Donors can grab a mitten during regular store hours. The deadline to drop off gifts is Monday, Dec. 12.
Student Life and Community Experience is also holding a poinsettia sale this year to fundraise for East African famine relief. The sale happens until Nov. 28 and all proceeds go to Niagara Responds: Save a Life Campaign for East Africa Famine Relief.
A six-inch red or white potted poinsettia is $8. Plants can be picked up on Friday, Dec. 2 in Decew Residence R209 or delivered to your office for $2. Poinsettias can be ordered online through Student and Community Outreach. For more information, contact 905-688-5550 x5434 or email community@brocku.ca
There is also a holiday giving tree in the lobby of the Schmon Tower. From Dec. 1 to 20, it will be the site for donations of non-perishable food items and gently worn winter coats.
