The first Brock Days photo contest drew photos from Brock alumni and students having fun during the annual Brock Days celebrations, Sept. 16 to 25, 2011. Participants tweeted their photos, posted them to the Brock Days Facebook page and emailed their submissions.
The submitted photos reproduced the excitement and celebrations of Brock Days; they showed students and children getting messy at Grape Stomp, Badger pride at the Niagara Wine Festival Grande Parade and alumni reminiscing and celebrating during Alumni Weekend.
The photos were judged by a panel of Brock staff, students and alumni. This year’s Best Photo winner, Grace Lin Ding, is a first-year Master of Business Administration student from China.
Ding’s photo captures cheerleaders in formation as they lead Brock’s float in the Niagara Wine Festival Grande Parade. The picture was chosen because of the excitement it expressed.
“Everyone in the photo looks extremely happy — students, cheerleaders, onlookers,” commented one of the contest judges. “The photographer has captured the essence of the celebration.”
“I found a great spot at the parade where the announcers were introducing the floats,” explained Ding. “I stood in that spot for more than two hours taking pictures with my Canon 450.”
In reward for her winning photo, Ding received a Brock Spirit Pack, a Brock Alumni digital photo frame, a Brock University commemorative photo book and a $50 gift card to Black’s Photography.
Ding was happy to accept the prize but didn’t think she would win. “I entered the photo contest for fun and to take part in University life,” said Ding. “I’m always the person behind the camera — never the person being featured. I never thought I would win but I’m really excited that I did.”
Five additional winners were randomly chosen, simply for participating in the contest. Brock graduates Amaris Gerson (BRLS ’08), Crispin Bottomley (BA ’04, BEd ’05), Brenda Tessmer McIntyre (BBA ’00), Stephanie Barnes (BBA ’91) and Brock student Jayne Crawly (third-year psychology) have won either a Brock Alumni digital photo frame or a Brock Spirit Pack.
