Buy some peanuts and Cracker Jack because Brock Baseball Alumni Day is an event you’ll not want to miss.
The Brock Baseball Alumni Day takes place on Sunday, Sept. 18, starting at 10 a.m. with an alumni versus alumni game, followed by a doubleheader at 2 p.m. against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks. A live band will play between games, which will be held at Community Park in St. Catharines.
The 2009-10 Male Athlete of the Year, Mike Walker (BBE ’10) will participate in this event as both athlete and spectator. Walker was a member of the Brock baseball team for five years, captain for his last two years and was commonly seen out in left field. Walker understands that athletics were a great way for him to make connections. Upon graduation, Walker interned for the Toronto Blue Jays because of a connection he made during his five years on the team.
Brock taught him the value of a hard work ethic and being a Badger taught him about leadership, so it’s no surprise that Walker is heading to Laurier in the fall to pursue his MBA. He is looking forward to taking a break from his studies to play in the Sept. 18 game as “it’s always great to catch up with old teammates and friends, as well as meet alumni from years prior.”
Coach Jeff Lounsbury appreciates the impact that each player made while on the team. Lounsbury says, “I cared for each and every one of the people involved with the program and I look forward to connecting with them at this event every year.”
As a young alumnus, Walker advises new graduates to “stay in touch as much as possible with the people that are important to you.” The day of baseball will be great way to get together and catch up with old friends, teammates, colleagues and faculty while supporting Brock.
The following weekend, Friday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Sept. 25, is Brock Days Badger Weekend, which is dedicated to athletic events on and off campus. The RBC Steel Blade Hockey Tournament will be at the Seymour-Hannah Centre all weekend and soccer, rugby and basketball games will take place on campus.
