A portion of University Road East will be closed this summer as construction crews continue work on the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex.

The road will close between Meter Road and Mackenzie Chown Block D. The fenced-off construction area will be temporarily expanded to make way for landscaping, sidewalks, curbs and reconstruction of University Road. (map)

The road should be reopened by Sept. 2.

Construction on the complex is on schedule and progressing nicely, said David Main, senior project manager with MHPM Project Managers. Occupancy is planned for early 2012.

Crews are working on the exterior curtain wall. Inside, they are working on the building’s electrical and mechanical functions.

About 150 people are working on the building on any given day.

Feedback from the Brock community has been positive, said Scott Walker, design and construction director with Facilities Management.

“People are happy with what they’re seeing,” Walker said. “They’re impressed with what they see from the outside, and how the complex looks in connection with the buildings around it.”

The construction of the complex creates a new courtyard between the Cairns building and the Mackenzie Chown complex. The walkway bridge connecting the two buildings should be open for the beginning of September, Walker said.
