Brock students played an important role in the recent World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, NY.

Thirty-two Sport Management students volunteered at the event, which ran from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. The students staffed information booths with local volunteers from Buffalo.

Scott McRoberts, director of Niagara Sport Commission, spearheaded the initiative. McRoberts, a Sport Management alumni and adjunct faculty member at Brock, said there was overwhelming interest in volunteering.

The information booths were stationed at both the HSBC and Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena, as well as the three player and media hotels in the area.

“All the Brock students I worked with were very well spoken, polite, and a real pleasure to work with,” American volunteer Paul Murphy said.

The student representatives included qualified volunteers and students completing practical components of courses offered through the Sport Management program. Sport Management student John Bell said he’d love to volunteer again for a similar project.

“It was a great experience to be a part of, and numerous people commented to me at the booths about how well organized everything was,” he said.

A number of Brock staff also volunteered at the World Juniors.
