Lunchtime turned into musical theatre at Brock today as the university’s new student glee club did a flash mob in Market Hall.

At 12:15 p.m., about 26 students launched into a performance of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. They stood on chairs and danced down a flight of stairs leading to the dining area. They emerged from tables, entrances and the cashier line at the Guernsey Market.

The flash mob was to promote the upcoming performance Glee Club Live in Concert at the David S. Howes Theatre on Jan. 28 and 29.

“This is a dream for music theatre kids – breaking out into song and dance in an everyday situation,” said Heidi Brabin, History student and flash mob participant, before the event. “We’re so excited to see it happen.”

The flash mob idea came from Adrian Petry, History and Political Science student and president of Brock Musical Theatre. He joined Chorus Niagara around the time a now-famous flash mob video of the chorus was released on YouTube. The video depicted the choir singing the Hallelujah chorus in the food court of Welland’s Seaway Mall.

The club chose the Journey song because it’s “practically the theme song” of the popular TV show Glee, which inspired the club’s formation. The choreography was kept “nice and simple” because members only had a day to rehearse it, Petry said.

His ultimate goal?

“A sold-out show at the end of January would be fantastic,” he said.

He also hoped it spread cheer to his fellow students, not to mention the 31-member glee club.

“This is going to be a day they’ll remember for the rest of their musical careers.”

Show times for the glee club production are as follows:

Friday, Jan. 28 — 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 29 — 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 30 — 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the Centre for the Arts at arts.brocku.ca

BrockTV recorded the flash mob, which can be viewed here.
