Services over the holiday season

Note: This story includes new information for those on campus on Wednesday, Dec. 29.

Brock will operate on a modified schedule over the holiday season. Here are details about what’s open, what’s closed and how to access the campus.

Brock offices and the James A. Gibson Library will close at 12 noon on Friday, Dec. 24. They will reopen for regular business on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The Walker Complex will be open to the public at the following times:

  • Dec. 22 and 23 from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Dec. 24 from 6:30 a.m. to 12 noon
  • Dec. 27 to 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Jan. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Jan. 3 to 7 from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Jan. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Jan. 9 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

From Dec. 27 to 31 and Jan. 2 to 3, access to the Walker Complex will be limited to the west entrance opposite the tennis courts. Regular hours will commence Monday, Jan. 10, 2011.

Holiday access: From Saturday, Dec. 25 to Sunday, Jan. 3, 2011 inclusive, Campus Security Services will unlock the Schmon Tower’s main entrance doors from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. for faculty and staff who do not possess an exterior door key/swipe card and have a legitimate reason to enter the university. Faculty and staff accessing 573 Glenridge, buildings A and B, and Academic East should also sign in at the Information Desk located on the main floor of the Schmon Tower lobby during those times.

The buildings with swipe card access are:

  • 573 Glenridge
  • International Centre
  • Brock Research and Innovation Centre
  • Mackenzie Chown blocks D, E, J
  • Plaza
  • Taro
  • Theal House
  • Welch Hall

For everyone’s safety, anyone entering the university during this period should sign in and out.

Faculty and staff do not need a pass to gain access provided they have their own key/swipe card for access and can produce ID. Anyone else must notify Campus Security via an email from their administrative assistant, Dean or department head and send it to security@brocku.ca advising of their impending visit.

This email notice must have been received prior to Dec. 17 by 4 p.m. and must have specifed times and dates of the visits. Brock ID must be produced on the day of the visit.

In the event of a building or grounds-related emergency during the period of Dec. 24, 2010 to Jan. 3, 2011 inclusive, call Campus Security at 905-688-5550 x3200. This will inform the applicable Facilities Management staff. Heating setbacks will be in effect when the university is closed.

Custodial Services will be provided at the Walker Complex during hours of operation over the holiday season.

Vending machines products will be the only food available on campus during the holidays.

Should a significant snowfall occur, major campus roads will be cleared, including Lots D and P. Visitors, faculty, staff and students should park in these lots. There will be no charge for permit holders to park in these lots over the holiday period.

The residences will be closed for the Winter Break from 12 noon on Wednesday, Dec. 22 until 12 noon on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. For information and details regarding this closure, refer to the End of Term Notice.

If you have questions regarding this notice after Dec. 24, please contact Campus Security Services at 905-688-5550 x3200.

Also, please note that on Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Facilities Management will be replacing the life safety emergency power generator which supplies the main campus emergency lighting, fire and security alarms and emergency power systems.

This work requires that the university disconnect its life safety generator for a period of 12 hours.

While this work is underway there is a slightly increased risk of a power outage.

If this happens, the following buildings would be without power, emergency power and lighting, and the elevators will not work: Residences (Earp, Decew and Vallee), Inniskillin Hall, MacKenzie Chown, Schmon Tower, Scotia Bank Hall, Student Centre, South Block, Taro, Thistle and Walker Complex.

Visitors to campus are being asked to take the following precautions:
* If possible, avoid working on the main campus on Dec. 29 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.;
* If you must be on campus at this time, sign in with Campus Security in the Schmon Tower lobby, or call 905-688-5550 x3200 to tell them where you will be, and for how long; and
* avoid using elevators.

For full details about the replacement of the life safety emergency power generator, check the Brock Portal and Facilities Management’s website.
