This year’s World Junior Hockey Championship, which kicks off on Boxing Day, is taking place across the border in Buffalo, NY. Putting all on-ice rivalries aside, Brock University students will be on location to lend a helping hand to our neighbouring nation.
Scott McRoberts, director of the Niagara Sport Commission, helped spearhead an initiative to get 32 Sport Management students from Brock involved as volunteer support for this event.
“Brock students will be the bi-national contingent at information booths sharing the responsibility with local volunteers in Buffalo”, says McRoberts. “This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in a sport-hosting environment, while providing a valuable service to the hosting committee to make the event a successful one.”
The information booths will be stationed at both the HSBC and Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena, as well as at the three player and media hotels in the area.
McRoberts, a Sport Management alumni and adjunct faculty member at Brock, was overwhelmed with interest as he sought to find qualified and committed volunteers.
Giving up time with family and friends, Brocks students will be gaining valuable experience, while catching a quick glimpse of the games as they unfold. Students have committed a minimum of 25 hours and will put in as much time as needed over the duration of the tournament.
