Market Hall mural officially unveiled

Jack Lightstone and Bogdan Luca

President Jack Lightstone chats with artist Bogdan Luca at the unveiling of a mural in Market Hall.

About 50 Brock faculty, staff and fine arts students were on hand Nov. 12 for the formal unveiling of a mural in Market Hall depicting important moments in Brock and Niagara’s history.

muralpictureCanadian artist Bogdan Luca was commissioned to create a piece of relevant public art for the university’s spacious new dining and gathering place. The result is Reverberation, a 60-foot mural done in acrylic that depicts a series of images from the history of Niagara and of Brock University.

After an introduction and welcoming remarks by university President Jack Lightstone and project manager Scott Roper, the artist spoke of his experience with creating the artwork, and took questions from the audience.

The painting’s images range from War of 1812 scenes to visual references of the Allanburg Womens Institute, whose original petition to the Ontario government ultimately led to the creation of Brock University.

Other works by Luca have appeared in numerous galleries around southern Ontario, as well as in institutions from Stony Brook University in New York to the University of Toronto Art Centre.
