The Brock University Film Series (BUFS) continues this week with the story of a recluse planning his own funeral party.
Get Low, a folksy drama starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray, is the second screening in the fall film series, which brings some of the best independent films to the Pen Centre. It tells the story of Felix Bush (Duvall), a hermit living deep in the woods in 1938 who shows up in town wanting a pre-death funeral for himself. Murray plays the owner of a local funeral parlor.
Other films in the series include Winter’s Bone, Animal Kingdom, Mao’s Last Dancer and Nowhere Boy.
The series brings some exciting films from North America and abroad, said Derek Foster, member of the program committee and assistant professor in the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film.
“While the festival film circuit will bring us some quality foreign language films too, we’re thrilled to be able to present a compelling mix of dramas, documentaries and quality filmmaking from respected figures and emerging talents that might not otherwise be shown in the Niagara region,” he said.
Winter’s Bone is the story of a drug dealer who vanishes after putting up his house for bail, prompting his teenage daughter to chase him down in the wilderness of the Ozarks. The film was a breakthrough performance by actress Jennifer Lawrence.
Animal Kingdom stars Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton and Guy Pearce. It tells the story of a Melbourne crime family bringing a reluctant teenage nephew into the fold after the death of his mother.
Mao’s Last Dancer is about a boy born to poor parents in rural China who achieves world fame as a ballet dancer.
Nowhere Boy takes place in 1955 as John Lennon learns that the mother who gave him up when he was five years old lives only a few streets away. It stars Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Get Low screens Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Empire Theatre. Tickets are $10. Films are shown every Wednesday until Nov. 24 for the fall season. The winter season begins in January. For a full list, visit BUFS — Films.
