Barry Joe has been named the next director of a Brock centre that promotes innovative teaching.
The Digital Humanities professor will begin a three-year term as director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies (CTLET) on Aug. 1. Greg Finn, the university’s Vice-Provost and Vice-President Academic, made the announcement Tuesday.
Joe is “well suited to the challenges and opportunities of the Centre,” Finn said.
“Brock is on the threshold of exciting growth with respect to teaching, learning and pedagogical innovation and Barry brings to the position his experience as an educator as well as his considerable expertise with technology,” he said.
The CTLET implements teaching and learning objectives outlined in the University’s academic plan, Brock 2014. The centre advances pedagogical innovation as Brock moves forward with new and diversified approaches to teaching and learning. Jill Grose, associate director of CTLET, has served as interim director for the past year.
Joe also served as CTLET director from 1998 to 2003. He has been involved in educational technologies and institutional policies related to these technologies over his 30-year career at Brock. He is known for piloting new technologies that eventually became common at Brock.
“I am delighted to be part of the CTLET team once again,” he said. “The Centre has grown remarkably since my last tenure as Director and shows highly developed strengths in both pedagogy and technology. Sound pedagogical practice must inform our application of the emerging digital technologies, so I look forward to the conversations about teaching and learning that lie ahead.”
Joe’s past accolades include:
- the Brock University Distinguished Teaching Award (1999)
- the national 3M Teaching Fellowship Award (2000)
- the provincial Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award (2007)
Dear Barry – congratulations once again and I look forward to taking part in workshops and projects that will undoubtedly inspire me to improve my teaching and learning at Brock!
Congrats again Barry, it was great working through the CTLET TA certifications with you, and thanks to Jill for the work she’s done to keep CTLET strong. Looking forward to watching you continue the wonderful work of keeping our TA / Professor development classes cutting edge!
