BUSU sets $40,000 campaign goal

The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) hopes to raise $40,000 with its Shinerama campaign this year.

It’s the largest goal in the history of the campaign, which raised $33,800 for Cystic Fibrosis research in 2009.

“Since 2004, BUSU has raised $99,605 for Cystic Fibrosis research and each year, our goal gets bigger and bigger,” Shinerama co-ordinator Nicole Savage said. “It really speaks volumes to Brock students’ commitment to such a great cause.”

Brock’s Shinerama efforts are part of a national campaign that raised $998,000 across Canada last year. This year, it is expected to top $1 million.

Brock’s contribution not only reflected a record number of local donations, but it earned the union the Spirit Award at a 2009 National Shinerama Conference, as well as the Best Secondary Fundraiser award for its “Shine the Falls” event.

BUSU’s two Shinerama staff members (Savage and Sara Glover) will serve as campaign advisors for this year’s national campaign, incoming BUSU president Sohail Ahmed said in a media release Monday.

Shinerama starts this summer.
