New books discuss white femininity, animal rights and the crisis in global capitalism

three books by Brock Sociology professors

Three books by Brock Sociology professors will be launched this week at an event in Academic South.

Murray E. G. Smith’s Global Capitalism in Crisis: Karl Marx and the Decay of the Profit System discusses how the world economy is experiencing a devastating slump not seen since the Second World War.

About Canada: Animal Rights by John Sorenson discusses our country’s animal rights record, from the fur trade to the seal hunt to the Calgary Stampede.

White Femininity: Race, Gender and Power by Katerina Deliovsky argues that white women are coerced into demonstrating their “whiteness” through elements such as sexual partners, participation in race inequality and adhering to white feminine beauty standards.

The books, all published by Fernwood Publishing, will be launched on Wednesday, April 14 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in the Academic South wing, room 427.

The launch will be followed by a talk by Smith about the arguments and themes of his new book.

The talk is sponsored by the Department of Sociology, the Centre for Labour Studies and the Brock Socialist Club.
