Dra. Rita Machado spoke with representatives at Brock on March 31.
An official from the Azores was at Brock last week to visit the University Library and faculty members from the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
Rita Machado, Regional Director of Communities from the Azorean Regional Government, was at Brock on March 31. Her visit included a talk with University Librarian Margaret Grove, as well as Sheila Young, director of Brock International. It also included a campus tour by Recruitment and Liaison Services.
Brock has a long-standing connection with the Azores, due in large part to the activities of Irene Blayer, professor of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. As a result, Azorean government officials have visited Brock, supported some students to pursue language and cultural studies in Portugal and donated academic books on Portuguese literature, linguistics, history and culture to the James A. Gibson Library.
This was Machado’s first visit to Brock. It closed with a meeting with Murray Knuttila, Provost and Vice-President Academic.
I found this very interesting for a few reasons. I had no idea Brock had any ties to the Azores, which is a part of my heritage. And I have been looking for a Portuguese course and just discovered that Brock offers one. Hopefully it is offered in the fall.
