Brock will host world wheelchair basketball event

Athletes from around the world will visit Brock in 2011 when the University hosts the first-ever Women’s Under 25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships.

Brock will host the inaugural event for young female wheelchair basketball athletes from July 15 to 25, 2011.

The event marks Canada’s second opportunity to host an unprecedented world championship, and supports the country’s ongoing efforts to be a world leader in wheelchair basketball, a media release from Wheelchair Basketball Canada said this month.

“We are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to showcase some of the top young wheelchair basketball athletes in the world,” said Wendy Gittens, Wheelchair Basketball Canada executive director.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada will partner with Brock and the Niagara Sport Commission to host the International Wheelchair Basketball event.

The bid was put together with overwhelming community support, event chair Nancy Sutton said.

Brock and the Niagara Sport Commission “are thrilled to be hosting this incredible international event.”

Brock has hosted several large sporting events in the past, including the 1993 World University Games, the 1999 Rowing World Championships and the Senior Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team Invitational Tournament and training camps last year.
