Niagara Social Justice Forum returns to Brock University

After taking last year off, the Niagara Social Justice Forum will once again return to Brock University for a full day of workshops, performances and exhibits this Friday, Feb. 1.

The Social Justice and Equity Studies program at Brock will host the sixth installment of the popular one-day community event, which provides an open forum for individuals and groups working for social change in Niagara to connect with one another.

The theme for this year’s forum is Our Own Backyard: A Global-Local Mash-up.

This event is free, accessible and open to everyone, but participants are asked to register in advance.

Programming for the day begins at 9 a.m. in Pond Inlet at the University with an opening plenary featuring Niagara’s own Ohnia:Kara Drummers and Idle No More movement.

The day will then break out into 16 interactive workshops taking place over three concurrent sessions from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Examples of workshops include:

  • Conversation CafĂ©: the Occupy Movement and its legacies
  • Solidarity and Action against Poverty
  • Unpeeling the Banana Trade
  • The Injured Workers Centre
  • The Politics of Aid

Information tables will also be set up to showcase additional social justice projects.

The day finishes off at 5 p.m. with a screening of the film Dal Puri Diaspora in Academic South 215.

This documentary by filmmaker Richard Fung explores the origins of dal puri, or roti as it is also known. Fung travels from his native Trinidad to the Indian Subcontinent to explore the politics of global migration and interwoven histories of peoples and palates. Fung will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening. Niagara-Caribbean food will also be served.

The 2013 Niagara Social Justice Forum includes a free light vegan lunch and free parking for registrants.
