An assistant professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies has been named president of a top association in her field.

Mary Breunig is the new president of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE).

The AEE is a non-profit professional membership association dedicated to experiential education and the students, educators and practitioners who utilize its philosophy.

“I am humbled by this opportunity to serve the association and the fields of experiential education,” she said. “I remain committed to supporting educators in their efforts to bring about a more just and compassionate world through experiential education theories and praxes.”

Breunig’s involvement with the AEE spans 15 years. In the late 1990s, she served as chair of the Northeast Region. Recently, her role expanded when she became co-editor of the Journal of Experiential Education. In 2008, she received the AEE’s Experiential Teacher of the Year Award.

Breunig’s more than 20-year involvement in experiential education has included the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario, the American Educational Research Association, the planning of the Niagara Social Justice Forum and serving as an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School.
