Traveling well on a budget one of many sessions at wellness conference

Dianne Abrey at Travel Cuts

Dianne Abrey at Travel Cuts at Brock will tell you how to travel well on a budget.

Dianne Abrey has a passion for travel, and she can’t wait to share it at Brock’s Employee Wellness Conference.

Abrey is branch manager of the Brock Travel Cuts, located in the Student-Alumni Centre near the Brock University Students’ Union. Abrey is hosting one of the most popular workshops on June 15 – Travel Wise, a discussion of how to fulfill your travel dreams on a budget.

“Everyone loves to travel,” she said. “Whether they’ve done it a lot or haven’t done it very much, travel is a very emotional experience. You’re learning about history. You’re learning about people. It’s exciting.”

Abrey has worked in the travel industry since 1980. In her session, she’ll tell people the ins and outs of getting the best deal when booking a trip. She’ll talk about air fares, insurance, travel packages, renting cars and getting a great price on hotels.

“If you know what you’re looking for and how to research it, travel is affordable,” she said. “That’s where we (at Travel Cuts) come into play.”

Abrey’s session will focus on the seven dimensions of wellness that are the central theme of Brock’s annual wellness day – social, intellectual, emotional, physical, occupational, environmental and spiritual. For physical wellness, for example, there are plenty of trips geared to walking and cycling. For the spiritual self, there are plenty of yoga wellness retreats.

“You don’t always have to take a flight to get to them either,” Abrey said. “There are places you can go right here in Ontario.”

There is no limit on attendees at Abrey’s session, which is from 10 to 11 a.m. But many sessions have a limit on the number of participants. There are 555 registrants so far, and some workshops have as few as six spaces left.

Other workshops include:

  • Buy Local, Eat Fresh
  • Career Revitalization: Fall in love all over again
  • Get the Buzz on Book Clubs
  • Run for Fun and Fitness
  • Fire Extinguisher Training

Visit the workshop schedule for a full list.

Again this year, there is a full-day volunteer opportunity through Student Life and Community Experience, and the Try-A-Tri triathlon hosted by Campus Security.

President Jack Lightstone will provide the opening plenary from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. Betty Lou Souter from Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold will close the day with a talk in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. Lunch in the Guernsey Market will include open mic entertainment, a penny sale/book sale and a volunteer fair.

Donations are still welcome for the charity and literacy fundraiser and can be dropped off at HR-EHS before June 10 or by calling 905-688-5550 x3274.

Registration for the conference opened on June 1 and closes on June 8 at 4:30 p.m. Click here to register.
