Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries and Financial Assistance

Various forms of financial support are available to graduate students. In addition to the scholarships and awards listed below, Brock University awards fellowships, scholarships, bursaries and graduate assistantships (teaching/research assistantships) to full-time incoming and returning students on the basis of academic merit. Students' offer letters include financial funding information that outlines, where appropriate, their particular graduate funding package. To be eligible to apply for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries, graduate students must be registered as a full-time student. A student who is withdrawn from the university or has a change of status will have their scholarship eligibility reviewed and adjustments made to their financial support.

Please note, full-time graduate students who accept an award that is not directly administered by Brock must immediately inform the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in writing. The student’s funding package may be revised based on the financial assistance received.

Brock University Donor Internal Scholarships and Awards

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers a variety of Internal Donor supported scholarships, awards and bursaries. Full-time registered students are eligible to apply for these awards. Students are encouraged to check the Faculty of Graduate Studies website: https://brocku.ca/graduate-studies/scholarships-awards/for a list of all scholarship and award competition deadline dates and application instructions. Please note, many of the scholarships and awards require the submission of an application, at the time of application for admission or as a continuing student. Award recipients will be selected based on the individual award criteria and approved by the Senate of Graduate Studies Awards Sub-Committee.

By accepting any awards administered at Brock University, the recipient automatically provides the University permission to use their name, as well as, program and year of study for release by the University and any other third parties approved by the University. Award recipients are required to provide a letter of thanks to the donor.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship

The Province of Ontario offers scholarships (in conjunction with Brock University) to master's and doctoral students in or entering graduate programs. The scholarships are tenable at an Ontario university of the student's choice. The awards are tenable in all disciplines and the applicant must have high academic achievement and meet certain citizenship requirements. The Province of Ontario provides two-thirds of the value of the award, and the University at which the award is tenable, provides one-third of the award. Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology

The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) scholarships are awarded annually to Canadian citizens or permanent residents with an academic excellence (80%) and registered full-time in an approved research master’s or doctoral program in science and technology at an Ontario university. The Province of Ontario provides two-thirds of the value of the award, and the University at which the award is tenable, provides one-third of the award. Special Recognition Awards

President’s Surgite Award

The President’s Surgite Award is intended to recognize those students who have been outstanding in the following areas:
·   Demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team.
·   Did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock’s academic reputation.
·   Made a significant contribution to student life at Brock.
·   Provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community.

Spirit of Brock Award

The Spirit of Brock Award are medals intended to recognize those students who best exemplify the spirit of Sir Isaac Brock and are presented to winners at convocation ceremonies held in Spring and Fall. Students who demonstrate any one or more of the following qualities can be recommended:

·   Courage
·   Innovation
·   Inspiration
·   Community Involvement

Governor General’s Gold Medal

The Governor General’s Gold Medal is awarded at Spring convocation to a graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program. Graduates from both the Spring and the previous Fall convocation are eligible and considered for the award medal.

Distinguished Graduating Student Award

The Distinguished Graduating Student Award is awarded to the most distinguished graduate for each graduate program. The award and certificate will be awarded at Spring and Fall convocation.


Jack M. Miller Excellence in Research Award

The Excellence in Research Award is awarded to graduate students who have displayed excellence in research. Each graduate program can nominate one master’s and one doctoral graduate student from each of the six Faculties. The successful recipients will receive acknowledgment at the time of his/her convocation.

Financial Assistance

Bursaries

Graduate Studies Bursary funds are intended to assist full-time graduate students with unanticipated or non-typical financial needs. Graduate Studies Bursary application decisions will be made at scheduled monthly meetings. Students applying are required to fully explain the nature of their unanticipated need for financial support. To be considered for a Graduate Studies Bursary students must complete a “Graduate Studies Bursary Application”. Travel Funds

Graduate student travel funds are available to full-time registered master’s students and full time or part time registered doctoral students who attend and present at conferences associated with their graduate program. The total amount of travel funds will be a combination of funds available from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Graduate Students’ Association and the student’s program/supervisor. The student must be presenting at a conference and the program/supervisor must confirm the attendance at the conference and that attending is of direct benefit to the student’s program and research. Ontario Student Assistance Program
The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides financial aid to students enrolled in full-time studies and part-time studies in graduate programs. This assistance is intended to supplement student’s financial support. The assistance is not based on academic standing but students are expected to make satisfactory progress in their studies. OSAP provides eligible Ontario students with financial assistance to help pay for their tuition, books, mandatory fees, living costs and transportation. Autism Scholars Award

With the support of the Ministry of Advanced Skills Development, a Scholar Awards Program in Autism has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars.

Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS)

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies(CAGS) brings together 58 Canadian universities with graduate programs and the three federal research-granting agencies, as well as other institutions and organizations having an interest in graduate studies. CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Award

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a master's degree in a health-related field in Canada. Funding from CIHR for graduate level studies is possible through a number of annual competitions.

Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Research Master's Studentship Award

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario offers a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Bachelor degree.

John Charles Polanyi Prize

The Province of Ontario has established a fund to provide annually up to five prizes to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their career who are continuing to post-doctoral studies or have recently started a faculty appointment at an Ontario university.

Mackenzie King Scholarship Award

Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities in support of graduate study: The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere. The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations. Applications for the Mackenzie King Scholarships must be received by the Faculty of Graduate Studies by February 1 to support study in the following academic year. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is a national funding organization that invests in Canada's capability in science and technology in the natural sciences and in engineering. NSERC offers Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) which provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in a master’s or doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. Ontario Women's Health Scholars Award

Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, a Scholar Awards Program in Women's Health has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent women's health scholars. The community of women's health scholars fostered by this Awards program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge about women's health and its translation into improved health for women, more effective health services and products for women, and a strengthened heath care system. Awards are offered at the master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral levels.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship Award

The Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, people and their natural environment.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and graduate training in the humanities and social sciences. Funding from SSHRC for master’s and doctoral level studies is possible through a number of competitions.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health; as well as leadership skills. Both Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. The Government of Canada and each agency (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) has posted eligibility information on their respective websites.
