Information for Attendees

There is something new to learn every time we gather. So, whether this is your first Pow Wow or if you’ve been on the Pow Wow trail for years, please review etiquette to ensure a respectful and fun time for everyone. Miigwech/ Marsee / thank you!

We’re thrilled you’ve decided to participate! A Pow Wow is a joyous, cultural celebration that highlights Indigenous music, dance, food, and art.

Pow Wows are community events designed to gather Indigenous and non-Indigenous, respectfully. The day features dancers in traditional regalia, multiple big drum groups, and singers! Not to mention, craft vendors, information booths, authentic Indigenous food vendors, and more!

Yes, absolutely non-Indigenous people are welcome and encouraged to attend! This is a family-friendly environment designed to showcase traditional culture and bring healing.

The Grand Entry and Opening Ceremony signal the beginning of the Pow Wow. The Opening Prayer will be offered by an Elder, prior to veterans and leaders carrying flags and Eagle Staffs, while drummers/singers offer honour songs. The Master of Ceremonies will announce when there are ceremonial aspects taking place, and how to respect them.

Regalia is our traditional cultural clothing, expressing who we are, and which community we belong to. It’s important to ask before touching anyone’s regalia.

Brock University has many water stations on campus where you can fill your reusable water bottle. The location of the Pow Wow is close to the university’s Hungry Badger, which offers Pita Pit, Tim Hortons and Pizza Pizza, BUT you’ll want to take advantage of the authentic Indigenous food vendors!

Most vendors now accept credit, however, it may be a good idea to bring cash too! ATMs are available on campus if you forget!

Of course! Many Indigenous craft vendors rely heavily on the support of participants at Pow Wows. Purchasing a craft that speaks to you makes us happy!

Registered dancers are divided into categories based on the style of dance they prefer ahead of time. Some of these include grass dancers, fancy dancers, jingle dress dancers, fancy shawl, traditional style, and more. There will be opportunities for everyone in the community to participate in the celebration as well! Every Pow Wow features Intertribal dances where all in attendance are welcome to enter the arena and dance together! Our fantastic Master of Ceremonies will lead and guide everyone when the time comes. Please do not be shy!

We will have limited seating available for spectators outside the designated dancing area. You are welcome to come and go and move about as you please, outside of the dance arena.

There are a few times during the Pow Wow where we ask participants to refrain from taking pictures and video – this includes during the Grand Entry, which is at the beginning of the Pow Wow. Be sure to listen to instructions from our Master of Ceremonies. He will guide all of us on this day to ensure respectful protocols are followed. Please be sure to tag and follow us on Instagram using the hashtag #BrockUPowWow2025
