Our Idea: Our solution was to design a new layout of the floor of the
library that we thought would be a more efficient use of space creating more
room for extra library material.
Procedure: 1. We measured the floor for its length and width,
and took
measurements for the bookshelves.

2.
We decided on an average book size as having a
4 cm spine, 27 cm height, and a depth of
21 cm.
3.
We used this average to calculate the
approximate number of books on each
bookshelf,
presuming each bookshelf held an average
of 6
shelves, 22 books on each shelf.
4.
We then brainstormed some ideas for layouts
that would create more efficiency.

5.
We selected one layout from our numerous ideas
based on the criteria we discussed. These
criteria were: density of books (books/m˛)
6.
We decided to keep some existing features, but
change certain aspects of the room to suit
the
library’s needs. For example, we kept the
numerous study carrels, but changed some
of
their locations. We also kept the conference
rooms, but added another to keep up with
demand.
There were plenty of bookshelves, so
we designed a system we had read about to
make the floor space around the
bookshelves
more proficient and easy-to-use.
