We came up with a solution
to create a more efficient layout of the 6th floor of the library by
designing a new system of bookshelves to hold the abundant supply of books that
clutter the shelves. Our design
consists of blocks of eleven shelves that are compacted together and slide
along tracks to create aisles between certain shelves. The two end shelves do NOT move and are
securely attached to the ground, in order to ensure the safety of the students. The nine shelves in between are controlled
by a computer which slides them into position.
There are two permanent aisles in between the three blocks of eleven
shelves. As well, there are two aisles
in each block of eleven that are created when the shelves move. The bookshelves also have censors to be sure
there are no students in the aisles before the shelves move.
The whole library floor is divided
into two halves by the row of elevators, conference rooms, and washrooms. On one half there are three blocks of
eleven, and on the other side there are two blocks and an additional conference
room.
