History students, their families and professors gathered at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canal Centre on Monday, April 17 to celebrate the launch of the 2023 edition of The General, a peer-reviewed undergraduate history journal. Co-editors Jesse Masterson (second from the right in the middle row) and Kirstin Koop (far left in the middle row), pictured here with the contributors, have spent the past four months bringing the journal to life. They solicited papers, organized the peer review process and selected papers for inclusion. Masterson and Koop worked with Tim Ribaric, Digital Scholarship Librarian, to develop the journal using the Open Journal system and managed a team of Brock undergraduate students who voluntarily peer-reviewed submissions. The pair worked under the guidance of Associate Professor Danny Samson. Topics in this year’s edition cover a wide range of history, including Norse interactions with Indigenous people, residential schools, music of the American Civil War, witchcraft trials in North America, chocolate, Roman gladiators and the coronation of Elizabeth II. The General is published annually by the Brock University Historical Society and the Department of History. Current and past issues are available online.
