Going overboard for Outdoor Rec

Students from the Outdoor Education Theory and Practice II course spent Friday afternoon learning how to perform a T-rescue in their canoes. Participants were taught to manoeuvre their boats in the shape of a letter T, with one of the water-bound students making an anchor on the front of the canoe while the other assisted those who remained upright as they pulled it from the water. The second-year Recreation and Leisure Studies course teaches outdoor recreation theories and engagement in a variety of introductory field experiences, including rock climbing, winter camping and canoeing. The class was originally scheduled to complete an outdoor paddling exercise on the Welland River, but inclement weather forced them inside to the warmer confines of the University’s Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre.
