Each Spring, the Confucius Institute at Brock University participates in the Ontario and Manitoba preliminary competition, leading up to the 2016 World Chinese Bridge, normally held in July in Beijing – a global-scale competition to showcase post-secondary students’ Chinese language proficiency, unique cultural skills and artistic talents. This year marked the 15^th annual Chinese Bridge competition and the second time that Brock has hosted the preliminaries. On Sunday, April 24, student contestants participated from Brock, Ryerson University, Trent University, University of Toronto Scarborough and York University. Adjudicators and colleagues also attended from Seneca College and several Chinese international media including CCTV (China Central Television, like CBC here), CCCTV (Canada International TV Inc.); and ChinaNews. About 60 were in attendance, including the nine contestants, teachers, adjudicators, friends and family. Brock co-hosted the Bridge competition in the International Centre Global Commons along with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto. It also marked the occasion of the first visit to our campus by the Consulate’s highest diplomatic official, Consul General Xue Bing. With the great support of HANBAN – the Office of Chinese Language Council International - as well as our partners in the Confucius Institute at Brock University, Minjiang University and the teachers who work tirelessly in the Confucius Institute at Brock, Brock student Kaitland Grassing finished in second place in the preliminary competition on Sunday.
