Brock will have a presence at a special walk held Saturday, May 20 in St. Catharines to raise awareness of missing and murdered women within Secwepmec and Syilx territories in B.C. Sarah McGean, Administrative Co-ordinator and Academic Advisor at Brock’s Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education, will be walking in honour of her cousin Ashley Simpson, who went missing without a trace in Salmon Arm, B.C., on April 27, 2016. Residents in the B.C. community have organized a walk to honour three women, including Simpson, Caitlin Potts and Deanna Wertz, who have gone missing from the area in the past year. Simpson’s family and friends have come together to host a similar walk in St. Catharines that will take place Saturday beginning at noon at City Hall. Participants will walk to Centennial Gardens, where a sacred fire will be burning at the park’s totem pole from sunrise to sunset. For more information, visit the walk’s Facebook event page.
